Promoting patient dignity and independence through quality care

What is Hospice?

Hospice is a part of Medicare that is available for all Americans who are at the end stage of an incurable illness. Hospice is meant to provide clinical, social, emotional, and spiritual support for patients with a terminal illness, so that they can live their life to the fullest, free from pain and distress, usually in the setting of their own home.

Hospice is not giving up, and hospice is not the cessation of health care. In fact, hospice is a Medicare benefit that allows patients with a terminal illness to receive clinical care at home, rather than make repeated trips to the emergency room or hospital. It is a collection of clinical and support services that’s free for patients since it is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid/Medi-Cal, and many private insurances.

Hospice is a care program rendered to people who are terminally ill. Here are some other important facts and advantages of hospice:

  • Hospice helps people suffering from terminal diseases to live comfortably.
  • Hospice isn’t only for cancer patients.
  • The focus is on bringing comfort to the patient, not on treating or curing their illness.
  • A specially trained team of professionals and caregivers provide care for the “whole person,” including their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.
  • Services may include physical care, counseling, medication management, equipment utilization, and the use of supplies for the comfort of the individual with a terminal illness and other related condition(s).
  • Care is generally provided in the home.
  • Family caregivers can get support.
